We Are FaRmily: developing an understanding of biodiversity and farming in suburban areas

Where and when

Paris, France. 12 August to 25 August 2013

Theme and project

Participants lived on an ancient farm close to Paris surrounded by countryside and animals. There were a number of cooperation projects with the Partner Organisation including taking care of the animals and vegetables gardens, cooking with a professional chef to cook international recipes using local products. In addition participants rebuilt fences for animals and plants care, to reflect on the management and sectorization of the territory in an environment close to residential areas. Participants discussed alternative solutions to the maintenance of green areas, parks and landscape while maintaining the biodiversity of flora and fauna. The partner organization trained them in different techniques and practices in an environmental spirit.

Partner organization

La Ferme d’Écancourt is an organization promoting environmental education and act as a link between the city and the countryside. Their work focuses on the agricultural world, ecology and sustainable development. La Ferme d’Écancourt educates by allowing visitors to experience the seasons, the lives of animals and different cultures. This child-friendly experience aims to introduce them to farming and preservation of nature, teach them respect for the environment and promotes exchanges between rural and urban citizens to develop their knowledge on the natural environment. Although the farm is a medium of education it is a working farm, with its economic challenges.

Participant profile

Participants needed to be enthusiastic about urban farming, and not afraid to get dirty. Participants were willing and able to aid in construction of fences and other work on the farm. They enjoyed working
in a diverse environment and were willing to share their culture’s cuisine to promote and implement Sustainable Development both in suburban and countryside areas.
