Where and when
Solola, Guatemala 27 December 2013 to 18 January 2014
Theme and project
The project will focus in the development of a predominantly indigenous community in three basic areas: education of children, workshops and training with parents and community leaders for business development plans and sustainable development (taking into account, environmental issues). The project is based in a community in the highlands of Guatemala where participants will live and interact with community people, get to know and understand their culture and their needs so that they can develop a plan and create activities that will cover or help with some of their development needs, taking into account the community’s culture and the partner organisation’s work.
This IPP will engage with the organisation Fundacion Movimundo Guatemala that works for the self-determination or self-development of communities left behind from what we might call ‘modern world progress’. These communities are mainly indigenous communities within Guatemala. This organisation promotes debate on just and sustainable development, and works for strengthening the decentralized government institutions as well as gender equality, justice and democratic participation. Among the areas of work, they focus on education, youth, environmental issues and mainly community development.
Participants interested in this project should be openminded, culturally sensitive and should be capable of adapting to simpler living conditions than usual, and perhaps be a little adventurous. A background or interest in Latin American culture, history, economics or community development is an asset. Previous work, or volunteering experience, in developing countries or other community development projects would also bring something to the IPP.
