Alison Hastings

Alison Hastings
2012 Brock Foster Award winner

Alison Hastings is an outstanding candidate for the Brock Foster Award because she exemplifies local volunteering and giving back to her chapter.  She has been a CISVers since age 11, and in that time she has had roles at the local, national and international level, but her continued commitment to stay connected and available to her local chapter is remarkable.  Many local volunteers grow into national and international positions, and ‘move on’ from the day to day activity of running a local chapter, but Alison continues to be involved in a significant way on the local executive board and two key local committees.  It is this commitment at the grassroots level that ensures the success and growth of CISV locally, and to the strength of our organization at all other levels.  This is the kind of contribution the Brock Foster Award is intended to recognize.

For three years (1984-87) she was adult co-liaison for Junior Branch, facilitating youth leadership through Steering Committee.

Alison has been instrumental in Victoria’s hosting history, from 1984 to present, including Canada’s first Summer Camp in 1990 and first Youth Meeting in 2011.  She has participated in the planning of four seminar camps, four summer camps, at least six villages, and one youth meeting, and has been the hosting committee lead for at least six years.

Since 1994 (yes, while working on the hosting committees!), Alison has volunteered as the local Village coordinator, running the adult/parent portion of CISV Victoria’s introductory five month Village orientation.  Alison developed the model CISV Victoria uses to educate Village-age children and their parents/guardians about CISV.

From 2007-2010 Alison served as Secretary on the local adult executive board, and in 2010 she moved to the Programmes portfolio, with responsibility for all international programmes at a local level.

While national and international volunteering is not a consideration for the Brock Foster award, I think it important to point out that Alison has also served as the National Village Chair while sitting on the local executive board and leading two key local committees.  Alison has also volunteered at the international level, through IBMs/AIMs, ARC, and international promotions.
