Description
The Detroit USA IPP combined our skills and spirit of volunteerism with the Howell Conference and
Nature Center's Global Village (a project modeled from those of Heifer International) to help them
in their mission to provide education that emphasizes experience, as participants gain a greater
awareness of world hunger, poverty, and population issues. The educational component included
participating in the Global Village simulation, which introduced the participants to life in
poverty stricken areas in several countries, as well as presentations given by the participants
about the issues of poverty in their own countries. They discussed ways to educate and communicate
information regarding these issues in their own communities. The project component was accomplished
by the participants planning and building a house from Thailand to add to the village. The home was
as authentic as possible (given the differences in climate and weather conditions). Participants
also planted an organic garden wh ich supports the educational experience in the Global Village,
and completed the house from Africa, which was built the previous summer. On going Local Work
activities for the Detroit Chapter include bringing more chapter members out to the site for the
educational simulation experience. Detroit will also continue to use the Howell Nature Center as a
resource for program activities.
