A CISV experience by the lake
Last Summer I took on the challenging role of Junior Staff for Fredericton’s Step Up, An Experience by the Lake, held at the Lake Magaguadavic campground in Canada.
As exhausting as it became to sleep minimal hours and still wake up to Skrillex blaring through the camp ground (the youth’s favourite alarm clock), it was without a doubt one of the most incredible experiences of my life.
The moment I realised that I was going to love this camp was when I first met the rest of the Staff via Skype. Everybody was so nice and full of amazing ideas—and I even recognised the Camp Director as the same director from a Village I participated in when I was eleven in Campinas, Brazil!
Meeting the Leaders was one of my favourite moments of the entire experience. We all had such a great laugh at the Leader’s training weekend - there was an instant bond between leaders and the staff as well. It made me even more excited than I already was to meet the youth that were coming to the camp.
I still miss the youth today. They always brought a smile to my face. Knowing that I, along with the Chapter and the other staff, were able to bring 40 youth together from all over the world to meet each other and play with each other is unbelievably satisfying. And though some days when I was exhausted, cold from the water’s winds, and covered in mosquito bites, watching the youths’ leadership development and maturity grow made it all worth it and I would definitely do it all over again. Just to see their smiles.
